New NAS or Storage For My Music

Recommended Posts

Yes, good point @jabbr There is a good thread on the Level1techs forum that has some examples of things going bad when ZFS was used without ECC RAM. If I could find it I would link it. 45Homelabs sells more RAM as well you're not stuck buying the machine with 8GB of RAM.

This weekend I will be tackling my project of getting Minimserver running in a docker container on TrueNAS Scale. The developer of Minimserver has offered to help if I need it.

Would the following have not worked for you?

minimworld/minimserver - Docker Image | Docker Hub

Digital:  Sonore opticalModule > Uptone EtherRegen > Shunyata Sigma Ethernet > Antipodes K30 > Shunyata Omega USB > Gustard X26pro DAC < Mutec REF10 SE120

Amp & Speakers:  Spectral DMA-150mk2 > Aerial 10T

Foundation: Stillpoints Ultra, Shunyata Denali v1 and Typhon x1 power conditioners, Shunyata Delta v2 and QSA Lanedri Gamma Revelation and Infinity power cords, QSA Lanedri Gamma Revelation XLR interconnect, Shunyata Sigma Ethernet, MIT Matrix HD 60 speaker cables, GIK bass traps, ASC Isothermal tube traps, Stillpoints Aperture panels, Quadraspire SVT rack, PGGB 256

I did not know this existed until just now when I clicked the link. I did not know what a docker was until maybe a week ago, and I still have not had time to sit down and get it running on TrueNAS Scale.

a quick glance and it looks like the link youi provided, and this link below are referencing the same things so it looks like it should work.

That tutorial you linked to makes things look difficult. Hopefully that's not the case.

Getting Docker running on my Synology NAS was easy.  Not too difficult either to spin up containers.  Hopefully it's just as easy with TrueNAS.

Also, on Synology, Docker isn’t required for MinimServer.  There’s a package available that can easily be installed.  Hopefully TrueNAS will gain something similar.

I just saw this thread, but I backed UGREEN's foray into the NAS space (it just funded today).

UGREEN NASync Series: Your Private Cloud Storage Solution. by UGREEN — Kickstarter

Their own NAS software stack is early days, but the hardware seems very solid according to the bulk of early reviews.

On the backer Facebook group, UGREEN committed to allowing people to install competing NAS software (despite initial reports that they had intentions to block that ability on a UEFI / BIOS level), though they made the usual caveats about not being supported and warranty coverage would be indeterminate should users opt to use different software.

Even so, impressive value for money on the hardware at the Kickstarter price.

They rather overshot their goal!

WOW!

I’m trying to figure out what’s different about ugreen versus all the other NAS manufacturers, and I can’t find any distinguishing features.

I don’t have time to watch 25 videos on the campaign page. Wish they would just write something.

You can go here and just scroll a lot instead:

UGREEN NAS | NASync Series

Mostly it's about hardware value for money for those who want to bring their own OS to the table (since UGREEN's isn't mature yet).

Ah, thank you.

Which OS do people use on these, that offers NAS features?

Imho, TrueNas or Unraid (using this since 8 years) are the best bet, however every solution may demand a learning curve

The ugreen NAS units support both of these operating systems?

Honestly, I did not check if the open OS choice is limited to specific OS'es, however UNRAID is Linux & runs from an USB stick - thus it is HW independend.

Here are the TrueNas minumum requirements:

Processor Memory Boot Device Storage
2-Core Intel 64-Bit or AMD x86_64 processor

8 GB memory

16 GB SSD boot device

Two identically-sized devices for a single storage pool

I know TrueNAS has very specific recommendations for which hardware it should be installed on. The CPU architecture is only one peice.

I may have a point using UNRAID , then ;-)

I am just now considering a NAS with Minimserver. What's a good inexpensive one with easily removable drive(s) that will run Minimserver?

NUC10i7 + Roon ROCK > dCS Rossini APEX DAC + dCS Rossini Master Clock

SME 20/3 + SME V + Dynavector XV-1s or ANUK IO Gold or Tedeska Tielke > vdH The Grail or Kondo KSL-SFz + ANK L3 Phono

Audio Note Kondo Ongaku > Avantgarde Duo Mezzo

Signal cables: Kondo Silver, CrystalCable phono

Power cables: Kondo, Shunyata, van den Hul

The main companies I'm looking at are QNAP, Synology, and TrueNAS.

If you have everything on a QNAP machine already, I strongly recommend to stay with the same manufacturer, same OS and sufficient number of bays. Migration from QNAP to QNAP is so easy and all RAID stuff, parameters and users will be transferred by simply swapping all the drives.

Which CPU version of the TVS-872XT do you have? Maybe it is worth having that one fixed.

I'm with you, the migration from QNAP to QNAP is a breeze.

My QNAP has the i5-8400T and 16GB of RAM.

Honestly, it is the best machine you can get in this class. Would have either this one fixed or replace it with the very same model.

Do you run standard QTS or hero on that one? If the latter is the case, it is not as easy to migrate to a consumer-grade QNAP.
