Has anyone compared AudioLinux or Gentoo Player to Windows based optimizers?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70280-has-anyone-compared-audiolinux-or-gentoo-player-to-windows-based-optimizers/ Hello,

Has anyone compared the SQ of AudioLinux or Gentoo Player vs windows based optimizers such as Audiophile optimizer or Fidelizer?

I am curious because Windows has the advantage of driver & application compatibility vs these audio optimized Linux versions.

Regards,

HQPlayer Desktop on Windows 7https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70279-hqplayer-desktop-on-windows-7/ Hi.

I know that HQPlayer Desktop does not support Windows 7.

But if anyone wants to venture into trying to make it work on Windows 7, Welcome to the topic.

I installed HQPlayer Desktop 4 on Windows 7 without any problems.

When I run the program, the error message appears:

The procedure entry point CreateDXGIFactory2 could not be located in the dynamic link library dxgi.dll.

It seems it's about the DirectX version, Windows 7 does not use DirectX version 12 (D3D12).

I tried using the dxvk and vkd3d-proton, programs that "convert" the DirectX to Vulkan, widely used in games, especially on Linux.

The dxvk is for D3D8, 9, 10 and 11 to Vulkan.

The vkd3d-proton is for D3D12 to Vulkan.

I extracted all the DLL files from dxvk and vkd3d-proton to the program's executable folder.

Now the error has changed: The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)

Is there a solution?

Thank you.

GentooPlayerhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/55235-gentooplayer/ GentooPlayer is a "minimal" linux system based on Gentoo with various changes to the system for audio use.

Other characteristics:
- multi platform
- multikernel (RT-Kernel, PF-Kernel and various configurations) also selectable via ssh or shell after booting
- low latency system
- multiplayer
- system configuration and use menu
- Quick commands already preset
- possibility of having the system in Ram
- free download
- etc

the reference forum and download links can be found here

The installation is done by copying the image to usb or ssd with the command:
xzcat /dir..../file.img.xz > /dev/sdX && sync
or using etcher:
https://www.balena.io/etcher/
It is important to resize the root partition with gparted if you want to use all the functions, like ramdisk ....

Solved? "Roon has lost control of the audio device"https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69566-solved-roon-has-lost-control-of-the-audio-device/ I've had an ongoing issue with Roon stopping mid-song after ~45 mins with "Roon has lost control of the audio device". I've tried timing it and it's not exactly 45min like 44:38, etc. I'm running Roon Core on my M1 iMac. Also, running is HQ Player 5.5.1. The NAA is 4.5v and is on my SoTM SMS200 Ultra Neo firmware. All this is connected to a Chord Hugo TT2 via USB. I run only PCM (Chord doesn't do DSD natively) and only to 706.5/768. This issue has gone on for year or so. I'm not sure when it started doing this.

I've tried a lot of fixes and posted HQ logs here in the main HQP forum a couple of Times. No real smoking guns there. MIska said he suspected it was DHCP issues.

I've tried things with DHCP on, off, static IP, etc. And still would see these halts. The halts just stop and do not reconnect unless I manually go into Roon and restart things. I don't always listen for longer than 45 mins, so it's tough to "test" any fixes. However, I did test simply outputting via Roon not using HQP and I did not have the issue then.

Yesterday, I put in 100ms buffer in the HQP Preferences "Buffer Time" setting. This did make a change for the better - the music stopped about 90 mins in and only for a second and restarted on it's own. I kept the music running and it did this a second time, but for even shorter time stopped and instantly restarted.

This seems to be on the right track to solve the issue... but is it?

HQPlayer Linux Desktop and HQplayer embeddedhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/30983-hqplayer-linux-desktop-and-hqplayer-embedded/I am a long time user (and BIG proponent) of HQPlayer. I find it to be the best upsampling engine going.

I have been saying for some time that a combination of using JRemote as a control point or remote, into HQPlayer, would be the best of both worlds, as I spent quite a bit of time getting JRIver to be a very friendly GUI. Since Jussi's Linux product called HQplayer embedded (or hqplayerd for short) can be a renderer, I thought I would begin a new thread about how this new world seems to me. I am a Linux idiot. (Note: CA forum member shadowlight is not a Linux idiot; he has generously helped me try to get acquainted with Linux and hqplayerd. I huge thanks to him).

One thing about Linux: it is many things. Some use Debian, some Ubuntu, and others a host of different forms of Linux. Before I settle on one version I thought I would take up shadowlight's recommednation to install a full plug-n-play version called Audiolinux. It resides on a 32GB bootable USB stick, plugged into a USB2 port on my HQP server (Windows 10, i7 6700k, 32GB, Nvidia cuda support, etc). Simply reboot the machine with USB inserted....Audiolinux comes up. Remove and reboot and I get Winwods 10 back. Pretty simple first step into the world of Linux audio.

The "regular" HQplayer that many of us use is called HQPlayer Desktop, and Audiolinux has one of those too (as well as MPD, JRIver, Roon, and many other audio products). So this thread's beginnings is to unclutter the normal HQPlayer thread and focus on hqplayerd and how, as a lInux newbie, I see it differing from the HQP desktop. The two products are never run together.

I am running HQPlayer desktop version 3.15 and running hqplayerd at version 4.0.a8; version alpha 9 and 10 have been tested but we were having NAA problems so I downgraded to A8. Now A11 is out there and Piero, the owner of AudioLinux, has graciously put it up, but I am using generous shadowlight's offer to play guinea pig first :)

OK, first off hqplayerd does not yet support cuda offloading, so I turned that off in Linux desktop too, to try and compare results (smooth playback and sq differences, if needed). Also, hqplayerd is command line driven so I am using cheat sheets from shadowlight to start, stop and change settings, and I admit ALL of my issues could be user error. :) Additionally, hqplayerd A8 does not support "auto" format switching (SDM vs PCM) so I edit the config XML and restart hqplayerd to accommodate (again, this is all in testing..I can't live this way).

On first tests I am finding that HQPlayer desktop on Linux acts and sounds virtually identical to my Windows 10 version, and seems to have the same limitations (i.e virtually none, although have not tested with multichannel yet, and I will assume that cuda offloading will need to be turned on then).

HQplayerd is being played from a Minimserver server and a couple of control points, BubbleUPnP and Kinsky (Kazoo requires OpenHome, and although I have created an OpneHome version of hqplayerd renderer Kazoo sees it but doesn't play. No big deal). As long as I play PCM in PCM (to 352.8k) or DSD in DSD (DSD512) the playback is fine. However, hqplayerd hiccups pretty significantly when trying to play PCM in DSD512 (haven't changed bitrates yet), regardless of the filter I think I am using (I say "I think" cuz I am not fluent yet in understanding the filter numbering in the XML files).

Note: I've tried using jRIver and JRemote (from my home office Windows desktop setup) but gotten poor and unusable results (best case horrible hiccuping, worst case silence), but shadowlight reports it does work, so that, my ultimate goal, is still on hold.

Here is my Linux desktop settings window, and then the XML driving hqplayerd (with upsampling filter set to 11, which I think is poly-sinc-mp-2s, set in order to reduce hiccupping but to no avail yet)

These screenshots are from a desktop remote called NoMachine, which is pretty good!

A toast to PGGB, a heady brew of math and magichttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/62699-a-toast-to-pggb-a-heady-brew-of-math-and-magic/

With the recent release of the upgraded PGGB, there are some new links

Here are updated PGGB 256 Links:

(original post)

With the embargo (finally!) lifted, wanted to start a topic to share impressions and feedback on the new PGGB music remastering/upsampling program.

The project started 6-7 months ago to do some experiments in upsampling music, and has grown into something WAAYY beyond anything any of us would have thought possible.  There are ~25 folks that have joined the journey from dev to alpha to private beta. With the impending public launch, very much looking forward to discussing PGGB as more folks are able to hear what has been hiding in their digital content all along.

Thank you @Zaphod Beeblebrox for pushing the math and sound quality to its ultimate limits!

(Disclaimer: although I'm delighted to have been helping on the project since basically day one, I have no financial interest in the project, I paid full price for my license, etc.)

Best CPU for hqplayerhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/37775-best-cpu-for-hqplayer/ I am building a computer for HQPlayer and I wonder which is the best CPU (up to now) I should use.

The options I look at are either intel 7th generation (6700k, 7700k), 8th generation (8700k) or 9th generation (x series).

Is there a significant difference that makes any of them the best choice? I do want to maximize performance of up sampling to DSD512 with best modes (XTR) possible.

It should be noted a good GPU will be in use as well (either GTX 1070 or 1080).

BTW, if AMD has any competitive CPU that matches or even performs better it can be an option.

I currently plan to go with 8700k but I am not sure if this is the right choice.

SACD Ripping using an Oppo or Pioneer? Yes, it's true!https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/28569-sacd-ripping-using-an-oppo-or-pioneer-yes-its-true/ Note: I told the PS3 thread I would announce what I've found, so I am writing this first post, long before I am ready to (i.e I don't have the links ready yet, nor the instructions). I expect my second post to be ready in a few more days.

Thanks to some very ingenious folks on other forums around the world, Mr Wicked's sacd_extract.exe has been found to be effective in ripping SACDS in those players that:

1) have Mediatek chips MT8580 (like Oppo 103/105, Cambridge Audio 752bd/cxu, Pioneer bdp-lx58/88 ) or MT8560 (like Pioneer BDP-160, 170 and BDP-80FD)

2) have an ethernet connection

3) have normal factory firmwares (meaning no mods)

The process involves two major steps:

1) create a USB thumb drive that contains an Autoscript program and a Telnet program, then plug it into your player to have it boot up with these scripts

2) using something like Putty (Windows, for example) Telnet from a computer into the BD/SACD/universal player above, then run a command line file that starts the ISO extraction.

Both of these steps require links that I will either edit here, or create a new post with them. I am still quite confused as to whether some of these files are different based on Mediatek chip version, of if this is all universal.

Here is an idea of the process (google translated and simplified)

01 – Folder AutoScript contain a server program (daemon) to rip original SACD discs

02 – Folder sacd_extract contain a windows client sacd_extract.exe and a file sacd.cmd. You should put this folder on a drive or partition with enough space to create .iso image. Edit sacd.cmd file with Notepad or another editor to change the IP address of the player. PC must be on the same network with the player

03 – Prepare clean USB stick

04 – Copy AutoScript folder with 3 files inside to the root of USB stick

05 – Disconnect from the player all USB devices

06 – Restart the player

07 – Check the Player menu and save IP address of the lan interface. Don’t forget to edit sacd.cmd

08 – It’s better to disable disc Autoplay

09 – Insert prepared USB stick into the player

10 – Wait until the tray is ejected

11 – Remove USB stick from your player

12 – Put sacd disc in tray

13 – Press the Close button

14 – Wait until the disc is recognized by the player

15 – From the Windows run sacd.cmd file and the ripping process should start

16 – To rip another SACD make sure that the sacd_extract.exe worked until the end, eject the tray with previous disc and repeat steps 11-15

17 – Be sure to reboot the player at the end!

Net/net, don't sell your Oppo/Cambridge/Pioneer players (and add to this list if you know of any more). I will have links to the Autoscript, Autoscrpt.TSS and sacd.cmd as soon as possible, along with some screen shots, if possible. I wanted to get this out there.

Caveat: as with the PS3, this ripping process is ONLY intended for those who already own the SACD discs, for archiving or personal file-based playback purposes. Please do not pirate!!

*******************************************************************************

June 2017: Here is my first attempt to edit/curate this long thread.

** User Haggis999 has written a Word Doc that summarizes how to rip on the Oppo platform (103/105).  Here is the link   https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fsigs8b3m24ld56/AACV2LC2EHfEdiS41fQmlKPxa?dl=0

Thanks Haggis999

** And here is a similar link for the Pioneer players BDP-80FD/BDP-170 and BDP-160 (thanks to HiRezGuy)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/13mq5pihw0enoqy/SACD Image Creation Process for Pioneer BDP-80FD.txt?dl=0

** Current eligible players?  Here is a quoted summary from user CatManDo.  He nicely recaps the majority of players out there:

"Concerning low budget players (200€), using the MT8560 chip, there are the Pioneer BDP-160 and Pioneer BDP-170 (not the current model 180, which uses a newer chip). A 160 is very hard to find, and the 170 is quite rare too, but offers show up on Ebay or the Amazon Marketplace regularly. They are certain to dry up soon.

There is also the Pioneer BDP-80FD, which is the US equivalent to the BDP-170. It's not available in Europe.

Players using the MT8580 chip are in a different price league (600€ and more). It's the Oppo 103/105 (all regional variations and Darbee chip players) and players based on the Oppo (Cambridge Audio 752bd/cxu, maybe others, generally more expensive than the Oppo), the Arcam CDS27 (CD/SACD/file player) and the top range Pioneer players BDP-LX58 and BDP-LX88."

Edit: February 2018

A brand new ripping player has been found, the Sony BDP-S590.  Thanks to several members, including Phthalocyanine and Dick Darlington, who's summary instructions post is linked here:

How To Install HQPlayer Embedded On Ubuntuhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/63747-how-to-install-hqplayer-embedded-on-ubuntu/ This is only a thread for installing HQPlayer Embedded on Ubuntu 20.04. This top post will host the commands needed and a video of me installing it, so people can see what's supposed to happen. If you need help installing Ubuntu, this isn't the place. If you are lost trying to install Ubuntu, I highly recommend using @Miska's HQP OS or a product from a company that does everything for you.

I see this thread as only a quick list of what people need to do and that's it. When something is outdated please let me know and I'll update it. Creating this as a separate thread will keep this at the top and easy to find rather than a few hundred pages deep.

For all discussions on HQP Desktop and Embedded see @ted_b's main HQP thread here -

https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/30983-hqplayer-linux-desktop-and-hqplayer-embedded/

As of Friday August 20, 2021, I used a standard install of Ubuntu 20.04 and entered the following commands exactly as below to get HQPlayer Embedded working. I'm sending audio out to a Network Audio Adapter (NAA) and don't need a custom kernel for USB DACs. I made each command its own line rather than combine a couple. I'm open to changing whatever needs to be changed and streamlined.

At the end I set the username and password both to hqplayer. This is used when accessing the web interface after install.

sudo apt update

sudo apt install libnuma-dev

sudo reboot

sudo apt install gnupg2

wget -q -O - https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/rocm.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -

echo 'deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/debian/ ubuntu main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rocm.list

wget -q -O - https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/rocm.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt update

sudo apt install rocm-dkms

sudo reboot

echo 'export PATH=$PATH:/opt/rocm/bin:/opt/rocm/rocprofiler/bin:/opt/rocm/opencl/bin' | sudo tee -a /etc/profile.d/rocm.sh

sudo sh -c "echo '/opt/rocm/lib' >> /etc/ld.so.conf.d/rocm.conf"

sudo ldconfig

wget https://www.sonarnerd.net/src/focal/libgmpris_2.2.1-8_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i libgmpris_2.2.1-8_amd64.deb

wget https://www.signalyst.eu/bins/hqplayerd/focal/hqplayerd_4.25.1-83_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i hqplayerd_4.25.1-83_amd64.deb

sudo apt install -f

sudo hqplayerd -s hqplayer hqplayer

sudo systemctl enable hqplayerd

systemctl start hqplayerd

sudo systemctl status hqplayerd

Here is the realtime video of my installation. Nothing to see here for most people, but I want to provide it so others can at least see what's supposed to happen.

Convert from PCM to DSD in real time in foobarhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70199-convert-from-pcm-to-dsd-in-real-time-in-foobar/ Hi.

How do I convert from PCM to DSD in real time in foobar?

In JRiver Media Center it's very simple:

  • DSD Studio -> Output Format -> Output Encoding = 1xDSD in native format (requires ASIO and 1xDVD capable DAC)
  • Playback Options -> Audio -> Audio Device = My DAC [ASIO]

It works perfectly.

Is it possible to do this in foobar?

Roon and HQPlayer upsampling order with FIR xover wav files in pipeline matrixhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70195-roon-and-hqplayer-upsampling-order-with-fir-xover-wav-files-in-pipeline-matrix/ I’m setting up HQP desktop to run eight channels of 96khz FIR xovers using the matrix pipeline.   I upsample to 192 using HQP and I use Roon as my music source.   When I play a 96 or 192 track all is fine.  But when I play a 44khz track I get odd echos especially in the high end.  I turned on Roon upscaling to 96 and it appears to resolve it.    But I really only want to use HQP for all upscaling.    Do my xover FIR wav files need to be 192khz or is there a way to get HQP to pre upscale to 96 then run the pipeline and then upscale to 192?

Where to put HQ Player in a complicated chain with studio gearhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70184-where-to-put-hq-player-in-a-complicated-chain-with-studio-gear/ Hi Everyone,

I stream from Qobuz within HQ Player Client to HQ Player Desktop, where the signal is upsampled to 192k. This feed goes into my Prism Sound Titan interface, which outputs the signal through various pieces of high end studio gear (Neve 1073 DPX preamps, etc.) in the analogue domain. The signal is then reconverted back to digital (to use the Titan's preamps), and sent out to my speakers.

I enjoy how this setup adds body, width and permits EQ shaping. However, I'd like to determine whether an additional conversion to DSD just before playback could further enhance the signal. So, I'm trying to send the post-processed 192k PCM signal to another instance of HQ Player, to be converted/upsampled to DSD and sent out to an NAA for playback.

Three questions:

  1. Can I run two instances of HQ Player Desktop on one PC, processing two different feeds?
  2. Is it even worth converting/upsampling to DSD after the initial 192k PCM signal has been converted to analogue, gone through analogue studio gear, and then converted back to a 192k PCM signal? Or has the original signal been so drastically altered that further conversion to DSD would provide no additional benefit?
  3. Is there any SQ loss in having the Qobuz stream come through Roon at the start of the chain, thereby freeing up HQPlayer to upsample after the signal is processed through the studio gear?

Dynamic Decompression?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/27012-dynamic-decompression/I've asked this in the past but never got a clear answer so here goes again...

Is there any software/filter/etc that would on-the-fly (preferred) or offline allow me to undo dynamic compression? Is this at all possible really? Obviously the distortion coming from this compression cannot be removed...

Amazon Music, Blackhole, Sound Source, HQ Player, Mac Mini....????https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70143-amazon-music-blackhole-sound-source-hq-player-mac-mini/ I want to use a mac mini to host all of the software- amazon music, blackhole, sound source, and hq player. I will control everything with screen sharing from another mac. I want to use the mac mini into my 8 channel Oktodac8. I would like to get this working with just two channel to begin with, then add 2 more channels for a pair of subs, crossovers for the subs, and ultimately, room correction and eq, and finally, another input (optical to the mac mini from my smart tv). From what I have read this is feasible- the devil is in the details...I have blackhole set 2 channel in my sound preferences on the mac, sound source indicates the amazon signal is being passed through blackhole but I have no clue how to set up hq player to get it to stream the amazon content.

If this setup just won't work due to limitation in the software it would be nice to know that as well but from I have been able to find, it seems like it should work as I am hoping without any separate hardware or software...???

I have looked all over the net and have yet to find a step by step instruction set. Any pointers to instructions or actual experience from a mac/amazon/hq player user would be most helpful!

Thanks!

Someone has built a linux app to control Roon playback.https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70153-someone-has-built-a-linux-app-to-control-roon-playback/ Earlier this morning while browsing The Flathub store for something entirely unrelated to Roon and streaming music, I saw this app suggested to me. It's called Community Remote and it is a Roon Remote for Linux and Android. I do not use Roon so I am unable to test it but I think someone here might be interested so I wanted to let the community know.

Help with setting up HQPlayer for Merging Technologies NADAC+Playerhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70129-help-with-setting-up-hqplayer-for-merging-technologies-nadacplayer/ I am building a digital front end as following:  Google Fiber 1G router -> Trendnet unmanaged switch -> SFP -> After Dark NetOnes switch -> SFP -> After Dark Roon server (i5-13599T 13th Gen + Nvidia 1030 GPU + 64GB DDR5) -> SFP -> EtherRegen(sideA) -> Ethernet CAT7(sideA) -> Merging Technologies NADAC+Player.  All front end digital clocked by one AfterDark Project-Giesemanhn OCXO clock.

I have Merging Technologies ASIO, HQPlayer Desktop 5 and Roon Server/Player all installed on my Roon PC server.

I have tried many different configuration settings but I cannot get sound from HQPlayer to NADAC.  I can play directly from Roon to NADAC and get sound, but my intent is to use HQPlayer to up sample all inputs to DSD256 for NADAC.

I would appreciate any help with setting up all the SW correctly.
