I am building a computer for HQPlayer and I wonder which is the best CPU (up to now) I should use. The options I look at are either intel 7th generation (6700k, 7700k), 8th generation (8700k) or 9th generation (x series). Is there a significant difference that makes any of them the best choice? I do want to maximize performance of up sampling to DSD512 with best modes (XTR) possible. It should be noted a good GPU will be in use as well (either GTX 1070 or 1080). BTW, if AMD has any competitive CPU that matches or even performs better it can be an option. I currently plan to go with 8700k but I am not sure if this is the right choice.

This thread is intended to differ from the M1 one by: Ooh, broadening the scope to all Macs Otoh, narrowing the focus on if a particular Mac Plays fine/Does not with regards to desirable settings My goal, and I guess it will be of interest to others, is to make an informed decision about the replacement (or not) of my MM1 8 Go RAM. With that machine I can, using convolution and, including Mch downfold to Stereo, ouput : • @ 256 SDM all PCM sources with rates up to 192 (384 untested) with 7EC Super and its 512 variant with satisfying filters ie Sinc MG/a or gauss hires lp Guess 512 and 1024 are desirable but no real frustration there • @384 PCM all PCM sources with rates up to 192 (384 untested ) with Sinc Long filter. That is frustrating and far from 1.5 M May (my DAC) capability that proves superior to lower rates with filters I could up that far. Yet with 1x sources it sounds good (I prefer SDM route and hires lp or Sinc MG with higher rates) • @128 SDM 64 SDM sources, (above and Mch : NO) with 7EC Light And source file has to be in a RAM disk and it’s not occasional glitches free That is very frustrating….. Plus I have RAM swapping almost all the time : I wonder if I would be so eager to churn a 16 Go RAM MM1… And you, what can you play with your Mac ?

hi all thinking about putting together a: Synology NAS / MinimServer / FLAC / Aries for the NAS the rack mountable RS814 has caught my eye but I'm a bit concerned about the grunt of the CPU another thread warned that transcoding = a heavy workload most of my files are red-book into FLAC (level 6) but there'll be more higher-res files in time further, if at a later date I added an RX415 - would this increase the load on the main NAS CPU to impossible levels? so, would the RS814 (Marvell Armada XP / 1.33 dual) be 'good enough' or would the RS814+ (Intel Atom / 2.13 dual) be a safer bet? any thoughts appreciated - thanks!

This past week I built a Carbon. Thus far I have had no problems playing any files except SACD. Is this a design flaw with the Carbon or simply something I need to change or alter in my Win 8 or MC 18 config? Does anyone have a suggestion that may help my situation? Resource Monitoring on my Carbon NT2800MT running Win 8 32 bit for a variety of files trends as follows: 44.1 kHz at 16 bit => CPU & Max Frequency averaged 15% and 65% respectively 192 kHz at 24 bit => CPU & Max Frequency averaged 17% and 70% respectively 352khz (SACD)* => CPU & Max Frequency averaged 60%-70% & 98% respectively *Note: My Weiss DAC is limited to 192 Khz input. Given that Media Center application must via programming reduce the resolution of the bitstream of the file prior to feeding my DAC. Also note that the 60-70% CPU utilization for the SACD playback is mostly a result of MC18 (40-45%) and System Interrupts (15-20%)
