If I had to guess, I'd say the ceiling was about 12 feet tall and the room was roughly 20x30 feet. All a rough estimate. PYP 1 Founder of Audiophile Style | My Audio Systems Link to comment
Deyorew
You kind of grazed over the B&W Nautilus there… I’m more interested in hearing about those. Did they keep up with today’s modern hi-fi sound quality? I saw them once in person, but no music coming out of them and that was like decades ago. The nautilus were enjoyable, and I'm glad I was finally able to hear them, but I wouldn't persue them if looking for state of the art sound quality today. Popular Post ray-dude
When I was auditioning the Alexx V's and XVX's, I had an opportunity to hear these speakers. After hearing the XVX's, I politely declined (I did not need the "do I really need to retire someday" financial discussion going on in my head ;) AudioDoctor, The Computer Audiophile and Audiophile Neuroscience 1 2 ATT Fiber -> EdgeRouter X SFP -> Taiko Audio Extreme -> Vinnie Rossi L2i-SE w/ Level 2 DAC -> Voxativ 9.87 speakers w/ 4D drivers Link to comment

It is such a long time ago since I heard the Nautilus somewhere in the 90's. I would love to hear them again. People have described them variously as sublime to not so great. Nothing new about that. I do recall one audiophile stating they were the best speaker he had heard on one occasion and the same person hearing them not long afterwards in a different location as not sounding nearly as good. People described them quite sensitive to setup and gear driving them. I think it is fair to say that Laurence Dickie's designs (Vivid) have moved on since the 90's B&W Nautilus just as have WAMMs have since the 80's. Popular Post bobfa
I keep running through my brain all of the disciplines that are needed to bring any speaker to fruition. Holding the WAMM design in one's head to see/feel the interconnections of everything involved is an awesome skill. Maybe I will hear them someday. PeterG
Breathtakingly expensive, like the Varese in another thread. But easier to understand how these and $300K or so on amps, source et al could produce an incredible experience. These require a certain combination of cash/room/wife, but if I squint... AudioDoctor
Actually, though it would likely be hard to walk away from the sound, I personally think it would be interesting to hear how much better they sound than the best speakers I have personally heard, which are the Avantgarde Duo GT with their iTron amplification. Followed by drowning my tears in a good, old, bottle of whiskey... No electron left behind. Link to comment
MarkS
I was lucky to hear these speakers once with Dag amps and pre and dCS Vivaldi stack. Bested my prior best heard (Magico M7’s with constellation and MBS). Meridimac
I very much enjoyed almost an hour with the Chronosonic XVX driven by D’Agostino with dCS source at a dealer in Manhattan before my new Meridian DSP9 active speakers were delivered. Even though much smaller and far less expensive, especially considering that the 1,260 Watts (each) are built in, they still manage to compete sonically with that Wilson design. All-In-One computer audio (just provide a quality source) has apparently advanced to the point where power, the operating system and innovative circuit design can directly address the drivers (eliminating passive crossovers) to present a lifelike, full-range 3D soundstage from 4’ tall floorstanders for less than $100k. -Not as impressive in a HR Giger way, but they fit my living room and budget. sdolezalek
Chris: The first thought that came in reading this was: "Speakers are still the single largest factor in the gap between the real thing and what we hear in the home...and, closing that gap appears to require extraordinary expenditure on behalf of the manufacturer of such a device." Am I reading you correctly in that regard? For example, is the best DAC, amplifier, pre-amp, etc. as much better than the rest as these speakers were above what else you might listen to? Is there any hope that a speaker with these capabilities could ever be built at "affordable" (maybe more like a new car than a new house) prices? Popular Post ray-dude
Another way I think about it is if a manufacturer knew they could sell 10k pairs of these every year, what would they be priced at. That is, how much of the mad is R&D cost driven with very low volumes to recoup, and how much is manufacturing cost driven where price wouldn't change even at very high volumes. I look at a manufacturer like B&W. The price performance of the 801's and 800's are outstanding, but they benefit from (relatively) huge volume sales for their lower lines that inherit this tech. Wilson gets similar trickle down for the WAMM tech, but their volumes at the lower end are (I'm guessing) even less than what B&W sells in the 800/801 series PeterG, taipan254 and MarkusBarkus 3 ATT Fiber -> EdgeRouter X SFP -> Taiko Audio Extreme -> Vinnie Rossi L2i-SE w/ Level 2 DAC -> Voxativ 9.87 speakers w/ 4D drivers Link to comment
