Impressive DXD downloadshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/31656-impressive-dxd-downloads/ I must say I find this download very impressive. This really sounds as if being there. The label has a very good track record. Their previous releases has all been 96 pcm, and very very good indeed but this DXD takes it all up a notch.

If this is exemplary for DXD recordings then that is what I will be searching for.

 DXD recommendations please!

Difference in encoding .wav from SACD ISO or from DSF (From same ISO)https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70179-difference-in-encoding-wav-from-sacd-iso-or-from-dsf-from-same-iso/ Hello everyone,

I am new here, and this is my first post. I did brose the forum from time to time, and I mostly do not understand what everyone is talking about hahaha.

Anyway, I have an issue for which I think someone from here might be able to give me some solution.

I am starting to create a collection of digital music files and have started ripping musics from SACD ISOs. I use SACDExtractGUI mostly, I also have Xrecode3.

Today, I extracted DSF files from a SACD using SACDExtractGUI, and decided to also create WAV files from it. I used dbpoweramp to convert the DSF files to WAV (24-bit / 96KHz). Then I remember that Xrecode3 also has options to encode from ISO straightaway, so I also encoded the album using Xrecode3 (same .wav setting).

When I tried to compare them using Musicscope, I see that they have differences. The graphs and charts are not same.

I then decided to extract DSF using Xrecode3, and then I encoded from the DSF to .wav, and I also encoded .wav straight from the ISO.

Again, differences in both files. I've attached bothe files, one from DSF, one from ISO.

Please advise. I am beginner in this, and would like this clarified so please help.

Many thanks in advance.

The Steven Wilson Yes Remixes - Great Deal HD Trackshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/45461-the-steven-wilson-yes-remixes-great-deal-hd-tracks/ Just noticed that the boxed set of the famed Steven Wilson Yes Remixes is available for a great price on HD Tracks. They are charging a mere $34.95 for the full set. This includes the albums:

The Yes Album

Fragile

Close To The Edge

Tales From Topographic Oceans - double album

Relayer

The vinyl set is just under $100.00 on Amazon, so this really is great value. It may be only 96/24, but that was likely the best that could be managed.

Tidal on PC, Android and Marantz: facts and questionshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70068-tidal-on-pc-android-and-marantz-facts-and-questions/ Hi everyone, I'm a new idal subscriber since a few days (July 24, when Tidal officially removed MQA completely), and I've been on Qobuz for years. Tired of promises on the Qobuz side to implement Qobuz Connect on Marantz/Denon, I took advantage of two new Tidal features: the total switch from MQA to FLAC and the Marantz firmware update to support Tidal Connect directly from the Android app (without going through Heos, which is nothing more than an app similar to Bubble UpNp).

I listen to streaming music (in HiRes) on three different systems:

1. Marantz amplifier connected to internet (wired on giga fiber) with internal HiRes DAC

2. Amplified speakers with internal HiRes DAC connected to the Windows PC via USB

3. Android 14 phone via headphones connected to the phone with external HiRes DAC (specifically Hidisz Sonata HD DAC, which has no LED or display to provide info on bits/KHz)

As I said, for years I used Qobuz (mainly cos Tidal was using MQ) but each of the three systems mentioned above had its drawbacks:

1. Marantz: no Qobuz Connect, not even via HEOS, so I was forced to use Bubble UpNp: from the Qobuz app I chose the music (albums, playlists etc.), I shared with Bubble UpNp, the latter would open and communicate with the Marantz.

2. Windows: Qobuz on Windows supports WASAPI exclusive, with the drawback that I obviously had to pause Qobuz to listen to something else

3. Android: obviously the only solution to bypass the Android mixer was USB Audio Player PRO, since Qobuz on Android 14 does not support the new bitperfect feature

With Tidal things are a little better, and here I come to the questions:

1. Marantz: not much to say, Tidal Connect works perfectly.

2. Windows: Tidal for Windows supports WASAPI Exclusive, so the "other sounds" problem remains. In theory I have ASIO drivers for my amplified speakers, I installed them and Tidal supports them, but even the ASIO drivers work in practice in exclusive mode, so I wonder: is it worth using the ASIO drivers or is WASAPI EXCLUSIVE okay? Aare substantial differences?

3. Android: up to version 1.122 if you connected the DAC to the phone, a Tidal prompt would appear (similar to that of UAPP) that asked for exclusive access to the DAC by Tidal, answering yes basically Tidal worked like UAPP. From version 1.123 this question disappeared: does anyone know if by chance Tidal has implemented the bitperfect functionality on Android 14 making the question obsolete?

Thanks to all

High Res Downloads vs SACD - General Thoughtshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/30739-high-res-downloads-vs-sacd-general-thoughts/Relatively new to the High Res Music scene and had a few questions for those who have been at this and have more comparative experience. I've actually had an SACD player for a number of years but only ever had a handful of SACD's because all my media has been utilized via network or on the go. With my recent discovery of ripping SACD's, I've been sparked back into high res music and now the ability to purchase downloads has grabbed my attention, which is also something because I wasn't looking for, didn't know existed.

So with that background, when I do buy SACD's I convert them to 88/24 flac and for the most part have been happy with that. I am probably going to do a little experimenting with going up on the sampling rate as in a couple instances I'm not convinced I don't hear the difference with the SACD. However, we're not talking about notable differences and I haven't compared back and forth directly so in all I've been pleased with 88K files.

So the questions I have looking at high res downloads are:

1. What is the source they use for creating the high res files? Some of them aren't even available on SACD. Are they being mastered specifically for the download market?

2. Do you think there is any quality difference between a SACD, and a downloaded 96/24 or 192/24 flac file? Is it really different for each album? Given I'm ripping them anyway, is there any reason to start with the original SACD?

3. For music with the option of both a 96 and 192 download, has anyone actually compared these and is there a difference? is it worth the extra $5 ish per album?

Thanks for any info, much appreciated.

Band of Horses - Acoustic At The Ryman (on Acoustic Sounds in DSD)https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/18945-band-of-horses-acoustic-at-the-ryman-on-acoustic-sounds-in-dsd/I'm downloading and will listen this weekend!

Using the latest hardware from DSD recorder manufacturers Mytek, Band of Horses mixed the record in the band's hometown haunt of Charleston Sound. As a result, Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman is one of a mere handful of non-classical/jazz albums mixed and mastered in the DSD format, capturing the ragged magic of an unforgettable performance in dangerously pristine quality.

2014 release, a 10-song virtual "greatest hits" set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the Band of Horses catalog, recorded at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013. This DSD release features 4 bonus tracks, 3 of which are not avaliable on any other format.

Having captured this two-night stand's worth of singular performances that the Nashville Scene said "brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash," Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there.

Ray! in 768kHz  Ray! - PCM 768kHz! - 24bit - FREE TRACK (Let The Good Times Roll)

The RME company is highly regarded by audio professionals.
Before we started working with Merging, RME was our converter of choice. So when we got offered to test the RME ADI-2 FS, a compact 2-channel AD/DA converter we gladly approved.

The first comparison with our Merging Anubis was immediately positive. Lots of definition, a beautiful soundstage with perfect placement. And after powering it with the Ferrum Hypsos external power supply, a sense of calm and control was added to the experience. This is clearly a serious converter.

The RME has a maximum sample rate of 768kHz. To really see what the RME ADI-2 is capable off, we created a 768kHz/24bit file straight from our Studer A80 tape recorder playing the ¼" reel to reel master tape from our latest release.
Listening and A/B comparing with the Studer the result is quite convincing. In our opinion the sound is very close to the analog master tape.

We would like to share the results with you.
Therefore we have made one 768kHz track from the album available for free for a limited time period.
The only favor we ask in return, is that you give us a bit of feedback; Is this a way forward?
Do you also hear an even greater sense of realism compared to the lower formats or are you perfectly happy with the formats you have been using so far?

For anyone who would like to purchase the entire album in 768kHz but has already purchased the album in a lower resolution in the past week, the price difference will be refunded. Send us an email and you will receive a refund within a few days.

Included are a great new album from Carmen Gomes and Sound Liaison, a new Rembrandt Frerichs album on Just Listen Records, Anna Fedorova and Dana Zemtsov on Channel Classics, several albums from the Navis Classics label which I've been delighted to discover, an immensely satisfying remastering of a complete Beethoven Symphonies cycle recorded by Bert van der Wolf, two new albums for flugelhorn player Angelo Verploegen recorded by Jared Sacks for Just Listen Records, and a new Pure DSD256 recording from Hunnia Records of works by Liszt by the excellent pianist László Borbély. Enjoy.

Carmen Gomes Inc., Stones in my Passageway. Sound Liaison 2023 (32bit DXD, DSD256)

Wonderfully fantastic! Carmen Gomes at her inimitable best performing highly personal interpretations of the songs of legendary blues singer Robert Johnson. Gomes is a master communicator. "Imagine Robert Johnson walking alone late at night in the 1930s United States of America, enroute to his sad demise in Greenwood, Mississippi. As he walks, he reflects upon his life, accompanied by the sounds of of the night and the echoes of his memories." That is the excellent summary of the theme of this album. But it still fails to fully capture the magic of Gomes and her band as they pay homage to these songs in their contemporary reimagination honoring this music.

This album deserves recognition as one of the best vocal albums released in 2023.

Carmen Gomes Inc. previously paid tribute to blues great Robert Johnson on their excellent album Up Jumped The Devil, released in 2020 (HERE). With Stones in my Passageway, Gomes and her compatriots move to a further high level of music interpretation. As always, the highly communicative Gomes makes these songs come alive in a very personal way. Her phrasing, dynamics and inflection are simply remarkable. She sings directly, honestly, without unnecessary embellishment or vocal manipulation. Her sultry delivery of inspired interpretations of this music simply immerses one into the soundscape being created by the collaborative work of Gomes and her band members. And the work of her accompanying band members truly shines in this recording. The percussion work of drummer Bert Kamsteeg makes a strong contribution, often a central one, complementing the vocals of Gomes. Contributions from guitarist Folker Tettero and double-bassist Peter Bjørnild are equally strong. These four musicians are beautifully in sync with each other, consistently complementing and extending each other's contributions to the music.

The recording quality is among the best recordings I've heard from Sound Liaison recording engineer Frans de Rond. And he's made quite a few of my favorite recordings. But, when recording Carmen Gomes, Frans seems to rise to yet another level of masterful work capturing the sound of this band. Frans has been Carmen Gomes' preferred recording engineer for 27 years for good reason! In this recording, Frans again applies his One Mic + recording technique to virtually immersive effect, but with some variation on the process, as described by Frans below in an extract from the enclosed booklet.

The album is 15 tracks of pure enjoyment—excellent contemporary blues that honors the traditions of the genre and the music of Robert Johnson. If you're a blues fan, get this album. If you love female vocals, get this album. If you simply enjoy great music making, get this album. Did I say this enough? Get this album. You'll love it.

spacer.png

Frans de Rond, writing about the microphone placement choices and recording process for Stones in my Passageway in the enclosed booklet:

"There are several reasons I call this a 'One Mic+' recording.

"In this recording, the role of drummer Bert Kampsteeg is very important. We wanted him to be able to play as freely and dynamically as possible. I realized that if we had Carmen up close to the one mic she was creating an acoustic baffle that covered up certain frequencies. The same was true for Peter Bjørnild's double bass.

"By moving Carmen and bassist Peter Bjørnild further away and supporting them with two Josephson C700A microphones, the drum sound got much more present. We wanted the small 'soundscape' vignettes to have a very dark atmosphere (Peter said he wanted them to sound as dark as the Mississippi night), so I decided to add a spaced pair of Josephson C617 microphones up very high in the studio and let them be our main source of ambiance. That worked very well. And also the deep drop-tuned low notes from the double bass that Peter employed on some of the soundscapes got picked up very well by that pair. Such low notes are almost impossible to hear close up, somehow you only hear the upper harmonics generated, so that was an extra benefit of the ambient pair. And it made me fall even more in love with the sound of Studio 2.

"You could argue that this is a return to old-fashioned multi-mic recording but I don't think that is true. The drums, guitar, and the main part of the double bass sound are still coming from the Josephson C700S. The microphone is key to the sound stage we have created.

"The two C700A support microphones are identical to the C700S except that each has only one figure of 8 capsules. The special quality of the C700A is that spill coloration is much less of a problem. So it is a perfect spot microphone."

The sonic results of Frans' choices are remarkable and imminently enjoyable. Well done!

Only $300 for the the 10CD + book set.

I can't imagine it will be a big seller at that price.

Will probably go down in price after the release.

Native DSD Album of the Year 2023. Good but sometimes strange selection.https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69202-native-dsd-album-of-the-year-2023-good-but-sometimes-strange-selection/ Native DSD Album of the Year 2023 ;  You can vote HERE, Album of the YEAR.

Good but sometimes strange selection to vote on, as an example  see the vocal selection;

It contains 2 albums recorded and  released in 2023;

The personal favorite of mine and a few others here on this forum;

'STONES IN MY PASSWAY' by CARMEN GOMES INC.

“The intimacy of the vocals, the expression of the guitar,  the refined sounds of the double bass, and the dynamics of the drums…. It's music that invites immersion, and a phenomenal experience on a refined hi-fi set!" Hifi.NL

and Ayanna Witter-Johnson & the LSO Percussion Ensemble interesting live recording;

spacer.png

Quote

This album showcases Witter-Johnson's special partnership with the LSO Percussion Ensemble, where her choice of rhythms and harmony and use of percussion all have symbolic meaning in relation to the songs' deep inspiration.

But the next two are more problematic.

Patricia Barber's Modern Cool may be new to the NATIVE DSD's website, but it was released in 1998. ( I must add that it's a great album and one of my favorite Patricia albums but it was my choice of  album of the year back in 1998 😀)

Quote

'This is a highly expressive and entertaining album, one that for those not familiar with Patricia Barber will serve as a superb introduction.' soundstage!

The last in the vocal section is a compilation of; "Jazz Legends like Billie Holiday, Ben Webster, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Sarah Vaughan, alongside Today’s Jazz Stars such as Aubrey Logan, Bill Cantos, Diana Panton, Holly Cole, Polly Gibbons and The L.A. Network."

All good but to me that's not an album....it's a playlist....ok, I could listen to Shirley Horn singing 'Dindi' all night but I prefer to put on the original album and not have Shirley mixed up with tracks featuring electronic keyboards such as Aubrey Logan's The Remembering Song, they don't fit together in my opinion and again to call a playlist a, ALBUM,...hmm.
