Music in General Latest Topicshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/forum/14-music-in-general/Music in General Latest TopicsenAlbum of the Eveninghttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/7577-album-of-the-evening/I recently started listening to one complete album from start to finish every evening. It's really great to sit down, no Internet, no phone, no iPhone, no i-anything and close my evening out with uninterrupted music. There's nothing like closing out each day on a great note, no pun intended.

I want to start this thread for people interested in doing the same thing. Listening to an album every evening and posting simply the artist and album information. Doesn't have to be a picture or the cover or a link or anything. It's more about enjoying this wonderful hobby.

I'll start with my Album of the Evening for tonight:

Artist: Boston

Album: Boston

Immersive Album Of The Eveninghttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/67213-immersive-album-of-the-evening/ Hey Guys, those of us who've taken the plunge into immersive audio, either via headphones or speakers, often end up sharing our recommendations or what we're currently listening to, via email or text. We need a place in which we can share  this great music with everyone else, similar to the long-running Album of the Evening thread.

This is that place. It may be a little quiet right now, or dominated by a few of us, but this is a marathon, not a sprint.

I'm currently listening to this one by Dave Mckendry. It's a really solid album, with a solid Atmos mix. The Blu-ray rip has a couple bonus tracks unavailable via streaming. I love the song islander and the acoustic version of it.

Who are You Going to See?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/27212-who-are-you-going-to-see/We have an album of the evening thread and now a song of the day thread, but what about live music? Who are you going to see?

I just bought my wife and I tickets to Karrin Allyson at the Side Door Jazz Club in Old Lyme, CT on April 23rd.

The Houston Press — “If there’s a choir in heaven, someday the exquisite vocalist Karrin Allyson will lead it. She’s such an otherworldly talent that the creator probably already has her on heavy rotation.”

Song of the Day (or welcome to the ADD Generation).....https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/27143-song-of-the-day-or-welcome-to-the-add-generation/We have an "Album of the Evening" thread, but what about those of us who tend to listen to just a song or two from an album, as we bounce around from album to album?

Well, this thread is for us. Posting of YouTube videos or music links from websites is totally fine, or you can just write the name of the song and the artist.

All genres are welcome- classical, jazz, bluegrass punk, metal, electronic, movie soundtracks, bizarre or mainstream, old or new, whatever floats your boat. The only rule is the posting of just one song per day. Other than that, it's anarchy.

What song made your day today?

Also Sprach Zarathustra - Recommendations?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/13978-also-sprach-zarathustra-recommendations/Just listening to this for the first time in a really long time, and noticing it is my only Zarathustra.

I'm actually quite pleased with it, I remember it getting good reviews at the time, and the late Karajan's style is quite well adapted to the music.

Sound quality is a bit better than your average early 80's DDD recording, but still, I wouldn't mind getting an audiophile version.

Best Version of Bach Cello Suites?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/66779-best-version-of-bach-cello-suites/ I just started reading this book about the Bach Cello suites, and of course started wondering which versions are considered the best. Perhaps @JoshM’s TBVO column has got me interested 🙂

I have one by Janos Starker that I really like.

I’d love to know what other people consider the best.

Any audiophiles here into Electronicahttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/23665-any-audiophiles-here-into-electronica/I am keen to see if there are any electronica fans on this forum, if so would love to start a thread on well recorded electronica music. Artists such as Burial, Apex Twin, Boards of Canada would certainly fit this mold. I assume audiophiles who listen to these genres are the exception rather than the norm but was keen to throw it out there.

Whats your opinion about the latest Johnny Cash release called “Songwriter”https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/70004-whats-your-opinion-about-the-latest-johnny-cash-release-called-%E2%80%9Csongwriter%E2%80%9D/ Hi folkies,
End of June (28th) the son of Johnny Cash, John Carter Cash, has published a virtual remake of existing tapes from his father with additional support of old friends  and recent musicians.

“Songwriter” is the 72nd studio album (and fifth posthumously released studio album) by Johnny Cash. The album contains 11 original songs written and recorded by Johnny Cash in 1993, but never released until now
Some of the stuff – to my ears – sounds like I would imagine AI generated content: The voice is a bit to high pitched and a bit too clear.
O
thesr are “pure gold”, like i.e. “Drive on”.
Even Dan Aurebach is on board.

Whats your idea about this “heritage exploitation”?
Pesonally, I am happy they did it, even not all is perfect..

Great Sounding Heavy Metal?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/60573-great-sounding-heavy-metal/ Hi Guys, inspired by this thread, I decided to start a separate thread for people to post their favorite, great sounding heavy metal albums. I know the genre isn't typically used in HiFi demos and the genre can be a little undefined. Let's throw caution to the wind, ignore the HiFi intelligentsia, and have some fun with this one.

Question: What are your favorite, great sounding heavy metal albums?

Is this already electronica or still acoustic?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69930-is-this-already-electronica-or-still-acoustic/ How do you see it, is it already electronic music or does it count as acoustic? As I understand it, it is recorded on handpans. But then the sound is changed a lot and sounds like drone, ambient etc. to me. So what counts more, the final sound or the way the basic sound is produced?

Reminds me of discussions at the time when instruments like the clavinet emerged. There, for example, metal reeds are plucked, then fed to the electronics via a pickup (usually a simple coil around the reed) and then processed as desired. Basically, the same way it is done with any electric guitar. But despite the distortion and modulation effects, it is not automatically described as electronic music. Or should we be more flexible with the categories?

East Wind Jazzhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69907-east-wind-jazz/ From time to time, there have been expressions of interest in Japanese jazz, especially that of its golden period in the mid-seventies.  Most of the CDs from that period are long out of print, although some occasionally are reissued and can be found on the Web.

My favorite label from that time is East Wind, which featured such sterling artists as Terumasa Hino, Masabumi Kikuchi, Sadao Watanabe, Isao Suzuki, Mikio Masuda, Shunzo Ohno, Takehiro Honda, Ryo Kawasaki, Yoshiaki Masuo, and Masahiko Togashi.  The label also offers Japan-only releases from some American players, mostly ones more conservative than the Japanese artists, such as Art Farmer, Sam Jones, and Cedar Walton. There's also a release from Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim).  Something for everybody.

Here is a site on to which I just stumbled, which seems to offer the entire catalogue at 1100 yen (about $7) per CD:

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/jazz/eastwind1000/

If you don't speak Japanese, the Google translation function works well.

I have all of these that I wish to have, so I didn't experiment with putting items in the cart to see where they'll ship or what they'll charge to do so.  If you have an interest in this stuff, this might be the only place where you can pick up the entire catalogue at this point.

With this release, an impressively good album has been added to Carmen's discography. My suggestion is to buy both part one (Up Jumped The Devil) and part two (Stones in My Passway as they don't fall short of each other and only become more precious with time.” ‘JazzFliets’

Are we living in the Golden Age of the Jazz Piano Trio?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/18046-are-we-living-in-the-golden-age-of-the-jazz-piano-trio/Piano trio jazz is one of my favorite forms of music (An Oscar Peterson trio album was actually my first or second Jazz albums ever).

Of course, one could easily live with the great output of Geniuses like Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, plus Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner, Erroll Garner etc. and would not need any contemporary contribution to this genre at all, and still have a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

However, it still feels like we are living right now in the Golden Age of the Jazz piano trio. In the last 15 years we’ve seen the emergence of such an amazing number of great trios that it is really tough to follow them all, hence this thread.

Obviously, given the relatively young age of most of these recordings, and the care that was given to many, there are a lot of very well recorded albums there, and these trios and their studios were among the first to switch to high-res recordings as well, so this is happy territory for the Computer Audiophile.

What triggered this explosion of great trios? Was it the late Esbjörn Svensson, who brought progressive and rock elements into this format and made it attractive for a younger crowd starting back in 1990? Was it the great success of the “Art of the Trio” sets by Brad Mehldau from 1995 onwards? Whatever it was, it just feels great to be where we are.

This thread is to capture and share great discoveries in the Jazz Piano trio, and I’m happy to start with my personal favorites.

I’ll just list stuff I either have or have heard elsewhere, in alphabetical order, with the only condition of being trio and after 1995, and highlight some of my personal favorites with stars. And just for the sake of simplicity; I just leave out Keith Jarrett and EST

Sony Music opts out of AI training for its entire cataloghttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69808-sony-music-opts-out-of-ai-training-for-its-entire-catalog/ I love this. What concert surprised you the most?https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69798-what-concert-surprised-you-the-most/ I thought I would open a discussion on the above topic.

I will start - don't worry.

My wife and I were lucky to get tickets to the last tour of Return to Forever. That was when we were living in Cleveland. Dzeezil Zappa and his band was playing his father's music. What an amazing show. So much fun so much virtuosity on that stage. RtF was good also 🤣

We saw Peter Gabriel, last year. That was a bucket concert for sure. It was such an inspiring show.

We were also lucky to see Thomas Dolby at the Berklee Performance Arts Center. It was one of his first concerts back on tour. It was also the show that was recorded for his DVD. It is pretty cool to have an autographed copy of that DVD also. It was amazing to see.

Steve Albini in the Guardianhttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/68518-steve-albini-in-the-guardian/ Steve Albini, the Chicago based producer and musician, features as the subject of an unusual in-depth "Long Read" in the Guardian today.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/15/the-evolution-of-steve-albini-if-the-dumbest-person-is-on-your-side-youre-on-the-wrong-side

For the ones not remembering his name, he ist the studio "artist" behind records like

PIXIES - Surfer Rosa

NIRVANA - Nevermind

BUSH - Razorblade Suitcase

PJ HARVEY - Rid of Me

THE BREEDERS - Pod

plus some 1500 other productions.

The article is much less about studio technology than about the person and the motivation behind that producer role.

Best Cover Songshttps://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/13854-best-cover-songs/I didn’t see a thread out there on the topic of “Best Cover Songs” so I thought I would start one.

The cover song can be a great but also very tricky thing. Many bands have launched their career by releasing a cover song as their first. This can go one of two ways. In the case of Orgy and “Blue Monday” they took an extremely popular song and tried to spin it’s success into their own. Orgy was never able to really sustain on their own. Then you have the cases where bands cover very old songs or songs from different genres trying to recapture it as new. I think Bow Wow Wow “I Want Candy” is good example of the later. They were able to build a healthy fan base, but “I Want Candy” is still arguably their most popular track. Both were two different takes on the cover, yet neither band ever seemed to get out of the shadow of the cover.

It is not uncommon for bands to throw cover songs on albums when they are trying to fill a record contract and don’t have the material on their own. Take Fear Factory’s cover of U2’s “I will Follow” on the Transgression album. Typically these don’t work out so well. (Footnote, I do love Fear Factory’s cover of Killing Joke’s “Millennium” on the same album. Possibly one of the heaviest songs, period!)

Then there are the bands that get it right. When they do, it is often a special thing where a great song can become two great songs.

To do this I feel a cover needs to do two things. First, it needs to remain true to the original song and pay homage to it. This is not to say that it must sound like a copy of the original. Rather it must maintain some aspect of the original. This could be the emotion, intent, originality…… Take Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt”. It contains the same raw emotion of the original, but in a very different sound.

Second, the cover needs to have the cover bands own signature placed upon it. Ministry covered Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” as an industrial remix. It has Ministry’s gritty sound and distorted vocals. Somehow through all of this it has that same sense of intimacy and dare I say love.

Here are four cover song’s that I recommend checking out if you get a chance:

Nine Inch Nails – Dead Souls

OK, Joy Division, and Nine Inch Nails. This has to be a recipe for success. This was actually the song that introduced me to Joy Division. I heard the NIN version and then realized it was a cover. It can’t get much better than this.

Johnny Cash – Hurt

OK, it can get better. You take an incredible song, written by an extremely talented artist and then transpose it to one of the greatest artists of all time. If you listen to this song on your hi-fi system in the dark, and don’t have the hair on your arms and neck stand up….. well then I can’t help you.

Ministry – Lay Lady Lay

The acoustical sound of Dylan transformed into an industrial powerhouse. Amidst this, Ministry seems to retain some of the sensuality of the original. I can picture two Goth kids getting married and using this version as a wedding song. Bless Uncle Al for this gem.

Type O Negative – Cinnamon Girl

The folk, country rock of Neil Young covered with Peter Steele’s bass baritone metal vocals, in their vampire Goth style. A dark, yet rich song.

OK – Now it is your turn to post your favorite covers, and tell us why you love it.
