Mike Rubin
From time to time, there have been expressions of interest in Japanese jazz, especially that of its golden period in the mid-seventies. Most of the CDs from that period are long out of print, although some occasionally are reissued and can be found on the Web. My favorite label from that time is East Wind, which featured such sterling artists as Terumasa Hino, Masabumi Kikuchi, Sadao Watanabe, Isao Suzuki, Mikio Masuda, Shunzo Ohno, Takehiro Honda, Ryo Kawasaki, Yoshiaki Masuo, and Masahiko Togashi. The label also offers Japan-only releases from some American players, mostly ones more conservative than the Japanese artists, such as Art Farmer, Sam Jones, and Cedar Walton. There's also a release from Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim). Something for everybody. Here is a site on to which I just stumbled, which seems to offer the entire catalogue at 1100 yen (about $7) per CD: https://www.universal-music.co.jp/jazz/eastwind1000/ If you don't speak Japanese, the Google translation function works well. I have all of these that I wish to have, so I didn't experiment with putting items in the cart to see where they'll ship or what they'll charge to do so. If you have an interest in this stuff, this might be the only place where you can pick up the entire catalogue at this point. I don’t know if Apple enforces regional restrictions, but the site suggests these can be streamed from Apple Music or purchased at the iTunes Store. I no longer use the iTunes Store, but, back when I worked at Apple, you could get 30:second samples of virtually everything offered for sale there.
