The Memory Player 64 - Laufer Teknik

Recommended Posts

Came across a review of the Laufer Teknik Memory Player 64, and wondered if any CA/AS members have one to share listening experiences. Laufer Teknik is the US distributer for the Memory player at this website.

Essentially is a computer with modified windows and Jriver. The outputs are SPDIF, USB, connectors for USB drives. They do have a propriety method of preparing streams or digital files with the ultimate aim of reducing jitter to nil. It is possible to buy the server on its own with all the goodies, however, the technology is available to install on a computer system or existing music server.

Their quote from the website: ' Originally exclusive to The Memory Player, these technologies are now licensed individually, and can be purchased and installed in any music server or computer audio system.'

One technology is convert CD to a 64bit wav file and playback 32bit, there are a few more interesting concepts the review says most of it. Also has a PSU that fits in an ATX plug, so not just limited to hardware.

There's also a mini version for about 30% of the Player 64, also worth looking at. The brand has been around for 2 score, so not a new company. Lots to read about this machine, the attention to jitter is something worth reading about.

Thanks 1.5, interesting

do you know what their software package costs. the link on their website to https://www.thememoryplayer.net/

doesn't work

How does this work with JRiver. JRiver obviously produce their own hardware with MC pre-installed.

Indeed,  their website fails, was working when posted. Dunno. There were no prices for the software listed, only the complete servers.

One and a half,

I bought a used Memory Player about 5 years ago directly from Sam Laufer at Laufer Teknik.   At the time I bought it, I think it was a year or 2 old, but it was in perfect condition, and updated to their latest spec, according to Sam.  I haven't used any of the newer Memory Players, but I think the design is pretty similar;  Windows operating system, J River player, with all of its possible output settings, output to your DAC via USB, AES, RCA, etc.   My player has no DAC but I remember Sam telling me that they were working on a model with an internal DAC.

Before buying the Memory Player I had 2 Aurender servers which were simple to use and got great support from Aurender if I ever needed it.  I found the Memory Player to be much more complex, but mainly because I wasn't familiar with J River at all.  I use a Lynx AES16e sound card, directly to my DAC, and I really like the way it sounds.

Their jitter-reduction technologies seem well thought out, and you can actually watch them work if you keep the IDEAS window open.  That program runs every few minutes as a scheduled task, and scans the C drive along with any other music drives I have attached.    I copied 16/44 versions of my music files onto a 2TB thumbdrive for my car, and every few months I plug it into the back of the Memory Player and the jitter software actually scans that drive along with the others.

I think sound quality is great, but I was not able to do an A/B with either of the Aurenders that I had.   I think if you feel comfortable with J River and also like to play with settings, the Memory Player is worth a look.   But if you want plug-and-play, my older MP is NOT for you but possible that the new versions are more user-friendly.

Dave
